Our history & legacy

More than five decades on the court

Founded as a nonprofit in 1972, the league grew from six teams into one of the North Country’s enduring basketball institutions.

The league begins

The Junior Chamber of Commerce forms the nonprofit league with six teams.

Tom Proechel leads

Proechel takes over soon after formation, growing the league to eight teams at the Malone Armory—now the YMCA.

Ken Cring takes the reins

Proechel hands leadership to Ken Cring. Expansion follows to 10, 12 and 16 teams, with games also played at Flanders Gym.

Historic high

The men’s, women’s and senior divisions combine for a league-record 39 teams.

Remembering Bob Loetterle

After the longtime scorekeeper and statistician dies, the league establishes a scholarship in his memory.

The legacy continues

The Bob Loetterle and Ken Cring scholarships are united to benefit local youth for years to come.

The Ken-Bob Tournament

An annual memorial tournament honoring Robert “Bob” Loetterle and the people whose service shaped Malone basketball.

The Wayno

The league’s annual referee award recognizes dependable, fair, no-nonsense service to the game.

Community investment

The adult league has supported St. Joseph’s alongside the Ken Cring CYO League, including the community scoreboard effort.
